Re: Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Act I: Good, but rough.
Act II: Great, but messy.
Act III: God-tier, one of the best hours of Cameron's career.

Overall, I loved it.

Re: Trailer #1

Oppenheimer and Barbie opening the same day is good for movie theaters and I’m sure that’s how Nolan and Gerwig both see it too. They’re excellent counter programming. Maybe. I'm as or more worried about M:I 7 the week prior and Indy a few weeks before that. These three movies have a lot of overlap...

Re: Trailer #1

The IMAX trailer: the building of the atomic bomb was one of the most nerve-splitting and horrifying events in human history and Christopher Nolan will terrify you with the building of the bomb and its consequences

The theatrical trailer: building the bomb was wonderful and also nice

Re: Trailer #1

I saw Way of Water in Dolby tonight and FYI, no trailer. Really wild how they're handling this.

Movie is mostly sensational btw.

BTW, funny of MI 7 to do an Imax exclusive and then choose a release date where they'll have Imax cinemas for just one week.
One of them really has to move. Oppenheimer especially would be wise to leave, or M:I 7 can move up. As we've all been saying, July is going to be a bloodbath.

Re: Sight and Sound Top 100

I treat the list mostly as an interesting snapshot of perceived trends and tastes of that particular place and time, and as extra motivation to fill in some gaps. Overall, I think the list's general trend towards more abstract or impressionistic cinema and largely away from commercial film generally...

I'd definitely do dual laser if your Dolby's aren't 1.85. You can always do single laser for subsequent viewings to compare.

Re: Oppenheimer - General Information

I forgot or overlooked just how stacked the whole entire summer season is in 2023. It's more than just Barbie or Mission Impossible 7. I'm afraid Oppenheimer is going to get lost in the glut of all these massive blockbusters week after week...best hope is it will be good counterprogramming for peop...

Re: Other filmmakers on Christopher Nolan

Well, I think the puzzle piece he's missing is if the filmmaker finds creating multiple distinct experiences a valid expression of their vision and craft. Some may find Dunkirk plays better more "claustrophobic" in 70mm than the epic vistas of 1.43, for instance, and neither is more inherently valid...
