Re: Box Office Dojo

Knives Out outperforming Hollywood is one of the biggest surprises and even delights of movies in 2019. I've been excited about that for a while.

Re: Last Film You Watched? VI

Midsommar Solid. Not as gripping or as memorable as Hereditary, but a nice follow up from Aster. He’s quickly becoming one of the best in the horror genre because of how well he blends his arthouse sensibility with provocative exploitation. its nice because aster proves that, like his figurative me...

Re: 2019-2020 Awards Season

I wouldn't be happy with 1917 simply because I prefer 6 of the other nominees for BP and BD, but there's been many worse movies made by much worse people to win these awards. It's helpful to remember that. Let's take solace regardless how you feel about 1917 that it's infinitely better than Green Bo...

I am elated right now. Truly amazing.

Re: Last Film You Watched? VI

The Terrorizers is a fucking masterpiece and it is a complete tragedy what happened to Yang's filmography.

if it wasn't for Yi Yi and Scorsese championing Taipei Story and A Brighter Summer Day we'd barely know him, let alone as one of the masters of the medium.

Re: NBC's Hannibal

ooh my b. S3 is very very good. the first half goes full hallucinatory art house and completely batty for network TV, the second half becomes almost a red dragon mini-series that, I feel, isn't amazing but solid. the actual series finale is perfect, though.

Re: NBC's Hannibal

I know right. But it should've been better in the end, the creator betrayed the characters too. So it's double sad. I consider PD to be a two season show now. Season 3, particularly the last half, is by far the weakest season, but how did Fuller betray the characters? also, the actual finale is ter...

Re: Star Wars Universe Discussion Thread

I choose Fargeat less for her narrative acumen (a bit of that too) and more for creating an alien, dynamic world essentially out of pure filmmaking. That's the type of spirit SW could use. and as right as you are about Lee, Star Wars can have a way of pulling people towards it at the expense of othe...
