Re: Black Panther (2018)

This is an excellent analysis. I view Killmonger as the antagonist I thought the real villain of the film was colonialism. KIllmonger wasn’t being selfish, he didn’t want to enrich himself. He wanted to restore prosperity and the rights of the colonized. His actions were misguided but his goal was ...

Re: Black Panther (2018)

I kinda can’t believe Marvel let this film get made. I still think it plays it pretty safe. Like a lot of the commentary remains in the subtext. Like, no one uses the N word. Doesn't mean the film doesn't get its messages across successfully. But outside the confines of Disney, it certainly could h...

Re: Black Panther (2018)

I really didn't think that needed an explanation. Its interesting that the word colonizer is seen as racist but what I’m familiar with is Hollywood’s white saviour narrative. They are the ones to bring knowledge, technology and values to other inferior races of colour into the modern age. As an Arab...

Re: Black Panther (2018)

The moment when Shuri casually called the token white man a colonizer, I was like https://media0.giphy.com/media/3o6oznE5MWL6qxwMCY/giphy.gif Shuri is my hero 😍 I kinda can’t believe Marvel let this film get made. It allows a subjugated group to express their seditious feeling which undercuts Hollyw...

Great movie, great analysis.
Yup, this is my favourite film of 2017. I fell apart during the last ten minutes. Simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking, this is the most humanist film I’ve seen in a long time.

Re: Blade Runner (1982) vs Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

In many ways 2049 is the Blade Runner for those who couldn't quite connect with the original. It has that key element, many of them felt, they were missing with the first one; an actually engaging narrative. K, the lead character of 2049, is a very likeable dude. He gets to be a proper hero against...

Re: Blade Runner (1982) vs Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

I wasn’t much of a fan of the original. It never clicked for me. With 2049 I felt I had a meditative experience. I left the cinema thinking, “That was utterly indescribable.” In that regard, I kinda dislike comparing them. I feel like the cinematic experience has a significant influence on my love f...

Re: Last Film You Watched? VI

Phantom Thread What a remarkable film. I love that PTA has managed to tell a love story in a new way. He offers a whole new perspective on the meaning of love. The two main character and their tempestuous dynamic felt like watching a symphony. Their strong-willed personality is what causes them to ...

Re: Dunkirk Awards Season Discussion Thread

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2RTMnWdyyU I can listen to Nolan, PTA and del Toro talk, like, forever. I will always anticipate every future film of theirs and have tremendous love for their body of work. I really enjoyed listening to the sincerity of Greta’s words. She seemed a bit overwhelmed by...
