I don't want to throw my hat into the ring on this issue, but no one seems to remember that Inception was Chris Nolan's first original since Following. Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige and The Dark Knight are all adaptations, and Insomnia was a remake. The characters already existed.

Even if Lenny , at the end of the film, believes that he was in a mental institution, that doesn't mean it's true.

AO Scott's comment isn't bizarre. Creating interesting set pieces doesn't mean Nolan is a visionary.

Just because he killed people called John G, doesn't mean a John G actually killed his wife.

Because he can form new memories, it just takes a while. One thing about Memento is that the whole thing may not be true. Teddy is helping Lenny because he thinks Lenny's wife was actually raped and murdered, and that Lenny's been looking for the killer. Teddy thinks that actually happened, because ...
