In the process of analyzing the film, I've had an insight which seems to be new. I haven't seen any reference to it anywhere on the Internet. I don't believe that Cobbs top was ever meant to represent a real world object-- a totem. Rather, I think it's a symbolic dream world representation of an IDE...
