snyder superman Zack Snyder Is Directing The Next Superman

According to Deadline, Zack Snyder has landed the job of directing the next film in the Superman series for Warner Bros. The Watchman and 300 director was one of several directors on a short list of filmmakers that producers Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas supposedly had been considering. There is no saying why specifically Snyder got the gig, but he does have a strong history with Warner Bros. and with comic-book films in general.

This news is still very fresh and possibly still developing, keep in touch with Deadline Holllywood for the latest and possible updates.

Darren Aronosfky Joins List of Potential Superman Directors

Another week, another possible director for The Man of Steel. The Los Angeles Times broke the news yesterday that Darren Aronosfky, the director of Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, and Black Swan, has met with Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas to potentially direct the upcoming Superman reboot. Joining a list that also includes Matt Reeves, Duncan Jones, Tony Scott, Jonathan Liebesman, and Zack Snyder, Aronofsky is by far the most impressive prospect yet. He brings a certain level of creativity and unpredictability to the project that films of this scale far too often lack. And while Superman may at first seem like a strange choice for someone so rooted in the independent sphere, this is same director once attached to projects like Batman: Year One, Watchmen, and RoboCop.

Most of you were in favor of Moon director Duncan Jones helming the project last week. Does Aronofsky’s inclusion in the mix change your opinion?

superman directors Nolan Meeting With Potential Superman Directors

Deadline‘s Mike Flemming is reporting that Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are meeting with a short list of potential directors to helm the upcoming Superman reboot, supposedly titled The Man of Steel. Rumored prospects include Tony Scott (Unstoppable, Man On Fire), Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield), Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), Duncan Jones (Source Code, Moon), and Zack Snyder (Sucker Punch, Watchmen). That list is a tad uninspired, although most seem to have intriguing projects yet to be released. My pick of the lot is Matt Reeves, based on the very strong early word for Let Me In. Perhaps Duncan Jones, but I was not much impressed with his debut film, Moon.

Meetings with the shortlist have reportedly already started up, and Nolan will submit his choice(s) to Warner Bros. in the coming weeks. Deadline also mentions a major DC characters announcement is just four weeks away (Batman 3, finally?). And with that 2012 deadline for The Man of Steel‘s release looming (or WB will lose the rights to creator Jerry Siegel), some official word should be out soon.

Is Chris Columbus Directing ‘Man of Steel’?

ChrisColumbus Is Chris Columbus Directing Man of Steel? So here’s an opportunity to take your mind off of Inception for a couple minutes – MTV SplashPage is reporting that Chris Columbus (the man behind the first two Harry Potter films) is rumored to have been offered the job to direct the next Superman movie. The screenplay, as you know, is being written by Batman Begins scribe David S. Goyer and is rumored to be titled Man of Steel. Christopher Nolan decided to oversee the project in a producer-like role after Goyer told the Dark Knight director ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman’ sometime earlier this year.

Since then, David S. Goyer himself and Christopher Nolan’s brother Jonathan have both been rumored to be under consideration to direct the new Superman. But MTV is reporting that Columbus is said to be “the right fit” for the superhero film according to insiders at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Could they be this far in the process of setting up the film?

More recently, Christopher Nolan told MTV News that his current focus is on fine tuning the right story for Superman rather than finding the right actor.

“It’s all about figuring out exactly the tone and meaning of the story and how you’re going to approach it,” said Nolan. “Casting comes later, and all of those considerations come later.”

Read the full article over at MTV SplashPage to get the full scoop. What do you think of Chris Columbus directing Man of Steel? Is he the right fit?

UPDATE (July 13, 2010): It looks like this rumor has been busted. Chris Columbus will not be directing Man of Steel.

Empire Magazine Gets Nolan and Inception Fever

empire cover thumb Empire Magazine Gets Nolan and Inception FeverThe latest issue of Empire Magazine is laced with Christopher Nolan goodness – and that’s an understatement. On the cover is Leonardo DiCaprio via July 16th’s Inception, and on the inside are 3 fantastic features on Christopher Nolan and his films. The cover story is a feature on Inception, and with on-set access and an candid interview with Leonardo DiCaprio, the article attempts to solve the riddle of Nolan’s latest film. Another article included in the magazine is an exclusive interview with the writer-director that touches on Batman 3, Stanley Kubrick, 3D, and the much talked about next Superman film.

“[...] while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago, you know thrashing out where we might move on from the Dark Knight, we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said ”by the way, I think I know how you approach Superman”.. and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context. I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that.”

Lastly, but not certainly not least-ly, this issue of Empire Magazine features (more a less) a profile on Christopher Nolan’s illustrious filmography. From Memento, all the way to The Dark Knight, Empire reflects on the fantastic -and still young- career of the filmmaker. The magazine even got Wally Pfister, Gary Oldman, Hugh Jackman, Robin Williams, and Jonathan Nolan to write about how Chris makes the magic happen. So head to your local bookstore today and find yourself a copy of Empire Magazine – you certainly won’t regret it!
