inception oscars Inception Earns 8 Oscar Nominations, Nolan Snubbed Again

Earlier this morning, the nominees for the 83rd annual Academy Awards were announced and Inception received a total of 8 nominations. Unlike 2 years ago, Christopher Nolan’s producing, and writing, were recognized by the academy. However, he was snubbed (again) in the Best Achievement in Directing category. It’s not too much of a surprise that there weren’t any acting nominations for the cast of the film either. Most of the nominees announced this morning were fairly predictable, no other major surprises or snubs. Here are the categories Inception was recognized for:

  • BEST PICTURE | Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas.
  • BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY | Christopher Nolan
  • BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY | Wally Pfister
  • BEST ORIGINAL SCORE | Hans Zimmer
  • BEST ART DIRECTION | Guy Hendrix Dyas, Larry Dias, Douglas A. Mowat
  • BEST SOUND MIXING | Lora Hirschberg, Gary Rizzo, Ed Novick
  • BEST SOUND EDITING | Richard King
  • BEST VISUAL EFFECTS | Chris Corbould, Andrew Lockley, Pete Bebb, Paul J. Franklin

Given the results of award shows like the Golden Globes and the PGA Awards, it seems things aren’t set in stone for any one film. What do you think Nolan and his collaborators on Inception have a shot at taking home on February 27th? Are there nominations not given that you would have like to seen? Share your thoughts below!

Christopher Nolan Earns Third DGA Nomination

nolan dgas Christopher Nolan Earns Third DGA Nomination

Hopefully the third time’s a charm when it comes to Christopher Nolan being recognized by both the Directors Guild and the Academy. Nolan was among five nominees announced today for the 2011 Directors Guild Awards, his third nomination from the group following previous nods for 2001′s Memento and 2008′s The Dark Knight. Nolan released the following statement expressing his appreciation for the Inception nomination:

I’m thrilled that the DGA membership has chosen to nominate me and my DGA team (Jan Foster, Nilo Otero, Brandon Lambdin, Greg Pawlik, Lauren Pasternack) for our work on Inception. The recognition of our peers is extremely gratifying — this is an incredible honor.
- Christopher Nolan

Other nominees this year include Darren Aronofsky for Black Swan, David Fincher for The Social Network, Tom Hooper for The King’s Speech, and David O. Russell for The Fighter. The only surprise is the lack of Joel & Ethan Coen for True Grit, but it’s likely they will replace one of the DGA five for the Academy Award nominations. Fincher aside, I could see any one of the other four getting replaced by the Coens. Russell seems the weakest in the category, but Nolan has missed out twice before. How do you think it’ll all play out? Academy Award nominations will be announced January 25th, followed by the DGA winners on January 29th.

Interviews: Guy Pearce on Nolan, Chris Nolan on Inception

guy and chris2 Interviews: Guy Pearce on Nolan, Chris Nolan on Inception

We’re getting into the thick of awards season, folks. That means the buzz around the best films of the year is building and those involved with the films get hounded by the press. Speaking with Deadline and Movieline, Christopher Nolan and Guy Pearce, respectively, talked about the films they worked on this year that are getting all the buzz. For Christopher Nolan that’s Inception. He gave a lengthy and rousing interview to Mike Fleming of Deadline just the other day. They talked about the 10-year scripting process Inception underwent, making it in the studio system, as well as some of the technological approaches taken with the film, and more. One of the moments of the interview I found most interesting was when Chris talks about keeping the audience in mind when working on such a potentially confusing film. He clearly treats his audience with great respect, and it’s really refreshing to hear.

The most stressful and difficult part of steering a large movie like Inception is that you are taking on the responsibility of communicating with a very wide audience. You can’t ever hide behind the notion of, ‘Okay, they just don’t get it,’ or, ‘Certain people just don’t get it.’ You have to be mindful of the size of your audience, and you have to communicate in a way that lets them in. That can be difficult when you’re trying to do something more challenging. There really is a delicate balance between presenting people with elements that are unfamiliar, but still giving them an entertaining experience for their willingness to come on that ride with you and accept a certain degree of confusion. That’s the most difficult thing, but it’s also a challenge I’ve very much enjoyed over the last few films.
- Christopher Nolan

Another favorite moment of the interview of mine is when Chris discusses working on such a secretive yet complex project with actors, and being considerate of their needs.

Inception is among ten nominees for the PGA’s Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures and five nominees for the WGA’s Original Screenplay award, bolstering the likelihood it’ll nab similar Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay nominations for the 2011 Academy Awards. It is worth noting, however, that strong contenders for Original Screenplay Oscar (including The King’s Speech, Another Year, and Blue Valentine) were ineligible for the WGA’s Original Screenplay award this year.
