After over two decades as a cinematographer, including work on seven of Christopher Nolan’s eight films, and four Academy Award nominations (along with his first win for Inception last year), Deadline is reporting that Wally Pfister is set to make his directorial debut on an untitled project for Alcon Entertainment. Company co-founders Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove issued the following statement:

We have been talking to Wally about making his directorial debut with Alcon for over a decade since we all worked together on ‘Insomnia’. Wally is truly one of the most talented artists with whom we have ever collaborated. To now have the opportunity to work with Wally as a director on this truly remarkable project, is a company highlight for Alcon Entertainment.

The film, scripted by newcomer Jack Paglen, is currently without any details, but remains an exciting prospect nonetheless.

Any ideas on what the project could be? And what are your expectations for Pfister as a director? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I would imagine Wally has learned a lot from Christopher over the years, and I suspect a lot of those skills will be implemented by Wally.

Can’t wait to learn more about the project.

If the script is good, then its highly likely this film will be superb.  Wally is talented, and he has been under the wing of one of Hollywood’s best directors.  And the movie is is already shrouded in secrecy, a Nolan trait.

Yea, but…being under Nolan’s wing for that long should convince him to pen the script himself. Nolan is a master of story structure and dialogue. I’m sure 8+ yrs  of collaboration hasn’t made him an expert like Chris but if he was able to pick Nolan’s brain for that extended duration, we can also assume he’s got some storytelling chops.

*The one thing that ends all of Chris’ films is:
Written and Directed by Christopher Nolan.

It seems only fitting that Wally deserves the same caption before the credits roll.

I am still doubtful about his skills to be a director, there must be some shortages to be a leading big director, it is never an easy job.
