Gary Oldman has been doing the press rounds for his upcoming film Red Riding Hood recently, and in basically every single interview of his the last question is about The Dark Knight Rises. Not that I am complaining or anything. I bet it gets tiring for Mr. Oldman though. A single answer isn’t exactly news worthy, but when you take all of them and read them one after another… well it’s still not newsworthy, but it surely is interesting. Let’s start with the interview Oldman gave to MTV:
“I haven’t seen the script yet. I know the story and it’s a great story. You look at The Dark Knight and you go, ‘How’s he going to top it?’ But I think he has. The scope of it and also the way he brings it back to Batman Begins, and really what Bruce Wayne discovers about himself, what he learns about himself at the end of this one [will top off the trilogy].”
Bringing the trilogy full circle? Topping the previous films? Those sounds like goals director Christopher Nolan would be aiming for. We know that there’s a lot of potential to do that with the two villains (Bane and Catwoman) that we know about. However, according to an interview with E!Online, there might be more.
“I think it’s a villain from one of the old, old, from way back from the old comics. It is a Batman villian… It’s not going to be the Joker. If I told you who the villain was, they’d kill me.”
Hmm. At first it sounds like maybe he’s just referring to Bane, but that last bit is ambiguous and is seemingly making the whole internet scratch its head. He says he knows the story and he believes Ann Hathaway will wear the cat suit pretty well, so what else could he be talking about? Speaking of suits, Flicks And Bits asked Mr. Oldman about putting back on his Commissioner Gordon uniform, and here’s what he had to say:
“My drab greys and beiges (laughs). I went to the production offices the other day and there’s all these fantastic pictures across the wall, Catwoman, this, that, and I thought where’s my wall? I don’t have a wall, I just have a rack of very very dull clothes (laughs). I’m looking forward to working with the gang again, Academy Award winning Christian Bale, I bet he won’t get my coffee anymore (laughs).”
So it seems Gary Oldman hasn’t read the script yet, but he knows the story. He can’t talk about one villain, but he’s seen art/photos pertaining to Catwoman. Now if Gary Oldman could just do another two movies before Rises is released, we could learn everything! Until then, maybe we should leave him alone.
