Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has landed the part of Superman in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman: The Man of Steel. The 27 year-old British actor will play the iconic American superhero, as well as his alter ego Clark Kent. Cavill seems to fit the description of actors they were looking for a couple months ago pretty well; he’s a relatively unknown television actor in his late twenties to early thirties. Cavill is mostly known for his roles in the television series The Tudors and the Matthew Vaughn film Stardust.

Superman: The Man of Steel is being produced by Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based off a story by him and Christopher Nolan. The film is rumored to start production in late summer with a official release date set for December 2012. We also recently heard that the production will be making its way to Alberta, Canada sometime this year to shoot.  So… what do you think about the casting of Cavill as Superman?

Okay, this is cool. He definitely has the voice, appearance, height, everything.

I am satisfy Zack Snyder, I am very satisfy.

Never heard of him, but then again I never heard of Christian Bale either when he was cast as Batman. I’ve never been a fan of the Superman movies, hopefully this one will peak my interest!

That’s true, I had no idea who Christian Bale was until I saw Batman Begins in 2007, and he’s the perfect Bruce Wayne/Batman.

I looked for a picture on Google for him in Stardust. Honestly can’t remember him in that film but I do remember that film being a bit meh.

How can you have not heard of Christian Bale before Batman Begins? Are you all 12?

anyways, Cavill should be interesting. I’ve watched Tudors before and I think he has the right vibe to him to pull of a younger, angsty, Man of Steel. Lets just see how Goyers Script turns out…

Two American icons. Two English actors playing them.
    That’s somehow quite ironic.

Nope, I’m almost 23. Christian Bale wasn’t a mainstream actor by any stretch when he was cast in 2003. He was practically an unknown to the general public, myself included.

    Three…don’t forget about Spider-Man!

  • Derezzed

Ok, you’ve got somewhat of a point there but there are a host of popular movies that he was in, 2 of them pretty big, before he was Batman. except I wouldn’t say that he “wasn’t a mainstream actor” because he was pretty sought after from at least American Psycho on.

The Machinist, Equilibrium, Reign of Fire, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, American Psycho, and of course Empire of the Sun, all of these movies were in their own way popular, and propelled Bale further into the Hollywood-o-sphere. I just don’t see how someone couldn’t have heard of him before Batman…especially if they are film buffs. Or just a regular fan of cinema in general. I don’t know..everyone has their reasons.

I think that’s your answer, I’m not a film buff at all. I love good movies and I try to see the “big” ones (I saw Iron Man 2, Toy Story 3, Inception, The Social Network & The Fighter in 2010)… but I don’t typically read movie websites unless they’re talking about a Batman movie.

I think we might be getting a little off topic now though. I hated Superman Returns, so hopefully with Nolan as the “Godfather” this next one will be a lot better!

  • Derezzed

yeah that could explain this confusing lol. I agree, while I didn’t hate Superman Returns, it was not the big return that Superman deserved…and I’m hoping this will be the right one. I’ve never been a big Superman fan anyways but still he is one of, if not the most, recognized superhero and comic book name in the world.

    No one is Welsh ;)

I am more interested in the fact that Nolan is confirmed to also have a part as writing the film.
NOW I’m looking forward to watching it

Very interesting indeed. I remember him from The Count of Monte Cristo. He was alright in it, but I bet he’s progressed as an actor since then. This movie is gonna be epic if the story is good.

It really is comparable with Christian Bale’s casting in terms of fan wish coming true. Still remember everyone on Superherohype forums voicing their pleasure over Bale casting and I think it’s a great choice to have Cavill portray the Man of Steel.

    The Avengers
    MIB 3
    Prometheus
    Star Trek 2
    Spider-man Reboot
    The Dark Knight Rises
    The Bourne Legacy
    Bond 23
    Superman: The Man of Steel

    STACKED

    2012 can’t get here fast enough! :D

Good choice. This guy was in the running to play Bond but of course Craig got the job. Had an eye on him ever since.

    Surely someone is Welsh? ;-)

I am very excited to see this movie! Henry Cavill is very well known from the Tudors in Canada. I hope to see Christopher Nolan in Calgary this year. Last year was the only year(out of 15) that I did not visit Kanaskis Country in November, which was where and when the film was filmed, they even stayed in the same hotel we do every year! I better get my Memento and Inception stuff ready to be signed (hopefully).
