Inception app red Inception Augmented Reality iOS App Released

Last month, we got word that Reality Jockey was working with director Christopher Nolan and composer Hans Zimmer on a new “augmented sound project” based on the original score of Inception. This morning, “Inception – The App” made its way onto the App Store.

This app is a dream machine that transforms the world around you into a dreamworld. It uses augmented sound to induce dreams through the headset of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. It will change your perception of reality.

Inception The App transports Inception The Movie straight into your life. New dreams can be unlocked in many ways, for example by walking, being in a quiet room, while traveling, or when the sun shines. You will get realtime musical experiences, featuring new and exclusive music from the Inception soundtrack composed by Hans Zimmer. This app is the first result of Christopher Nolan, Hans Zimmer, and Michael Breidenbrückers’ collaboration using augmented sound.

I’ve been playing with this app for a few minutes and I’m already completely blown away. It seems there are 13 different dream levels and I’ve already unlocked a few of them. In the full story, we have descriptions of the dreams that are available now. The rest will become available to unlock following updates to the app. So, if you have an iPhone, iPad, or an iPod Touch, and you’ve actually read down this far without stoping to hit the App Store, go download this app right now. “Inception – The App” is free on iTunes.

[UPDATE (Dec. 9)]: Hit the full story to see a video of Hans Zimmer discussing the iPhone app.

Reverie Dream:
When you entered your dreamworld for the first time this dream was played. You create the world of the dream. We bring the subject into your dream. This dreams twists the sounds of your dreamworld into previously unreleased music from the movie. Listen how nothing in your dreamworld sounds how it normally does. Our dreams feel real while we’re in them. It’s only when we wake up that we realise something was actually strange.

Sunshine Dream:
To enter this dream induce your dreamworld during a sunny day and be still. This dream transforms your sunny day into a surreal whirling thunderstorm. Remember, our dreams feel real while we are in them. It’s only when we wake up that we realize that something was actually strange. This dream features previously unreleased music from the movie. You can collapse this dream by being active or by the weather at your location changing.

Action Dream:
Induce your dreamworld and then walk or be active. This dream will not be played if you put your device into sleep mode. Your actions in the dreamworld control the music. The longer you move, the further you progress into this dream. It cuts up and sequences the sounds around you and mixes them with the hectic rhythms of the “Mombasa” theme. When you have explored far into the dream you will reach a calm zone, before jumping back into the action again. It sounds beautiful when walking in the city. Try it. You can collapse this dream by staying still.

Still Dream:
To unlock this dream go back to the dream map and induce your dreamworld in a loud place and be still. You will be rewarded with the “Dream is Collapsing” theme featuring Johnny Marr.

Sleep Dream:
Come back tonight after 11pm and induce your dreamworld from the dream map when you are quiet and still. It takes the slightest sounds from your environment and weaves them into your dreams. This dream features previously unreleased soundscapes and hugely stretched musical elements from movie score.

Africa Dream:
To unlock this dream go back to the dream map and induce your dreamworld while you are in Africa. It is a varied cinematic dream space which features the “We Built Our Own World” theme from the movie.

Quiet Dream:
To unlock this dream go back to the dream map and induce your dreamworld at a quiet place and be still. You will be rewarded with a vast acoustic landscape generated from your dreamworld including unreleased soundscapes from the movie.

Travelling Dream:
You can enter this dream by travelling fast when you induce your dreamworld. This dream listens and finds melodies to imitate. It turns whatever vehicle you are traveling in into a meditative instrument. It is a great companion on your journey. Listen to the “Time” theme from the soundtrack in a way you have never heard it before. If you slow down this dream will collapse.

Limbo:
Entering too many dreams within dreams is unstable! You can unlock the undefined dream space of Limbo by inducing your dreamworld from the map and entering three dreams in a row. The fourth dream will take you to the shores of Limbo.

    Who can argue with a free app? Not to mention one that it is amazing.

  • Thenextnolan(ANTONIOVALDEZ)

    cool!!!!!!!!

  • Jamie

    It’s free? I better download it quickly before they start charging for it

  • http://www.nolanfans.com AlexHaas

    This app is the coolest thing. I’ve had it playing for the last 45 minutes and while I was writing up this article. The only thing is… I don’t think I’ll be in Africa any time soon. Or ever.

    Is anyone else having problems with static in the background and a lot of broken audio, or is it just me? I don’t think it has to do with the headphones I’m using, since the “Still” dream track works seamlessly when the iPhone is “sleeping”… but as soon as I bring it awake, in comes the static and stuttering audio. Which is a shame, because apart from that the app is flawless and awesome and all that good stuff.

    Any ideas?

  • http://batman-news.com Batman-News.com

    I’ve got an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.1 and I keep getting stuck on the part where it says “Constructing your dream”. How long is this supposed to go on for?

    @Jazz I had the stuttering audio problem so I restarted my iPhone and that fixed it.

  • circa

    NOOOO the one time i regret getting a droid instead!

  • Kisa

    I didn’t have a problem getting mine running. I have the iPhone 3GS btw. I downloaded the app using iTunes on my computer and then synced it to my iPhone. I started up and it only took about 10 secs for it to finish constructing my dream. I had no probs with audio so far so idk what could be the issue for you guys.

  • Bryce

    the app is aaamazing, been playing for atleast two hours. haven’t unlocked the sunshine, Africa one or the traveling fast one. But for free I am in love with the app. Off to limbo I go. (:

  • Jazz

    Yeah, maybe I’m just karmically unlucky or something, because I deleted the app and started from scratch only to run into the static and choppy audio again. Then I deleted it again and re-installed it just like Kisa described, beat-for-beat, and right now the only things coming through into my headphones are stuttering, static and the occasional sound of keys being tapped on a keyboard.

    Oh well.

  • dagn96

    It says I can use it in an iPod Touch but when I go to install it it tells me that it requires the iPhone 3.2 software update

  • Jay

    So, No good news for Android boys?
    If anyone, who’s involved in this project, is listening then please do something about releasing one for Android too!
    I’m sure that it’ll be appreciated in the Android Market.

  • http://www.nolanfans.com George

    @ dagn96
    I’m having the same issue. Very frustrating considering there isn’t actually a 3.2 software update for iPhone.

  • http://www.rjdj.me RjDj

    Hi all,

    Apologies for the issues you’ve been experiencing

    @Jazz @Batman-News – On first run the Inception app has to decompress all the audio (the constructing your dreams section), if there isn’t enough space then the app might not be able to complete constructing the dreams. Can you make sure you have at least 300Mb of free space? Hopefully this might also solve the audio drop-outs issue as well.

    @dagn96 @George – the app requires iOS version 4+, 3GS, iPhone 4 or newer generations of the iPod Touch. What device and OS version are you using?

    Thanks,

  • Jazz

    @RjDj

    Well I know I have more than 300 MB of free space… I may be using a 3G instead of a 3GS, which would be really frustrating if that was the root cause of the problem. I’m trying to figure out a way to check that.

  • Lazzlow

    Seems like the problem is only occurring on iPhone 3G

  • Jazz

    Well then, that’s unfortunate. Thanks for the clarification, though, in any case.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/GCsthedarkknight GCsthedarkknight

    hi guys same here with the sound problems and i`m as well using an iphone 3G :/

  • Lazzlow

    Maybe it’s a case that iPhone 3G is a low end of it’s list of iPhones

  • Magic

    @RjDj

    I have the 2nd gen Ipod Touch with iOS 4.2 and the app does not seem to be compatible (no audio ever plays). I notice you say it only works with the “newer generations” of the Ipod Touch, but which specifically do you mean? I know the 2nd gen Touch is compatible with the new ipod headphones that contain an external mic. Using those, shouldn’t the 2nd and 3rd gen Touches have the exact same compatibility?

  • Confused

    I’m a little confused. How do I unlock the limbo dream? I’m confused how to do three dreams in a row?

  • EMIRC-DNIM

    I have an iPhone 4 and it works like s charm :) coolest app

  • http://www.nolanfans.com George

    @RjDj
    I found out that in order to get iOS version 4+ on my iPhone 3G, I need iTunes 10. And to get iTunes 10 I need Mac OS 10.5+. Since i have 10.4 I can’t get iTunes 10 and, therefore, am currently unable to update my iPhone to version 4.2.

  • Lisa

    I have an 2g ipod touch with iOS 4.2. The app is working, but it’s having a problem processing the sounds around me so the audio sounds like a broken CD with static.

  • Bryce

    @Confused

    I accidentally unlocked Limbo. heh.

    They way you do it is, quickly change the dream three times in a row. For example;
    Shake the iPhone to enter an action dream, then stay still for the still dream, then be quiet for the quiet dream. done. :D

  • Lisa

    … Hmm. I put the iPod to sleep while the Reverie Dream was running and the audio improved greatly. They should give a heads up on that. Or did they?

  • Connor

    Im running mine on my iPod but im not hearing any sound at all or anything…..anybody know what i’m doing wrong?

  • Shane

    @Connor
    You didn’t chain @RjDj to a computer with a promise to free him/her until these bugs are fixed.

  • Nick

    wait…so I’m confused. So do your headphones HAVE to have a mic? I wonder if thats my problem. I dont get any sound at all. Just a screen that keeps saying “Inducing Quiet Dream” and no sound comes out. I’m using high quality headphones, but not mic….

  • Bryce

    @Nick

    You need headphones with a mic. The ones that came with my iPhone worked. Although I wish my more expensive ones did. :(

  • Lazzlow

    Even if you’re on iOS 4.2 with iPhone 3G it still has that bug, i think they should patch this thing

  • http://www.rjdj.me RjDj

    @Magic @Lazzlow The problem with iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G is that the hardware is not really capable of running the app properly. Supporting older models would compromise too much on the experience – there is a lot going on. Sorry you’ve not been able to try it properly.

    Thanks.

  • Ariel

    Yeah, not working on my 2nd generation iPod Touch even though I have the iOS4 software update. Fix this please?

  • Nick

    Well I finally got it to work on a very cheap pair of headphones that has a mic that only has sound coming out of the right ear because they are broke! Thats funny. My $80 pair wont do anything :) Thanks! Awesome app. Now I just need to get a pair that works in stereo!

  • http://themoviemash.com Barrett

    Do they have one for Android?!?!?!

  • Darcy S McCallum

    anybody unlocked Sunshine Dream, i’m in Australia and it was damn sunny yesterday and still didn’t delve into sunshine dream.

  • Bryce

    @Darcy

    I couldn’t unlock it too, and I’m in Australia also. But I think it goes off the weather app on the iPhone. It said it’d be cloudy today, and there’s not a cloud in the sky… :\

  • http://www.nolanfans.com AlexHaas

    @RjDj Thanks a lot for coming on here to answer some of our questions! :) This app totally rules.

    @Barrett There’s no Andriod version. I’m not sure if that’s something they’re planning or not.

    @Darcy The Sunshine Dream was the first dream that I unlocked. Although, it wasn’t particularly sunny when it happened.

  • Jonathan

    I can’t unlock limbo. It’s sunny where I am, I just got the active and traveling dreams unlocked, but it always seems to default into Still dream, even if I have it in a quiet room. Any ideas?

  • http://www.nolanfans.com/2010/12/08/the-inception-augmented-reality-ios-app-released/ josh

    i have this on my iphone 4 to unlock limbo shake it to induce action dream then stop to induce still dream and then be very quiet to induce the quiet dream then the next dream you select will be limbo

  • http://www.nolanfans.com AlexHaas

    @Jonathan Yea, you’ll just have to play around. It took me a little bit of time to unlock it.

  • ]: So anxious to try!

    This isn’t working with my iPhone 3G! D: All i hear is a repeat of the sounds around me, but the repeated sounds are static-y. Help please!

  • runningfree

    need..to…go…Africa.. o_0″

  • Eclipseis

    i attempted to use mine. since i used it on my iopd touch abd couldnt listen to music while using it, i listened to music off my labtop…i gotta tell u, when Coldplay is alterted to sound something like a cross between,uh, Alvin and chipmonks, and Madonna, i do belive perphaps its a dream? ha this appt in great for travling. driving down the highway with the window down is not recommended though! it was weirder that the Coldplay!! i love this appt!

  • http://www.inception-trailer.com Inception Trailer

    I just discovered nolanfans.com because of Inception and love it! Great information about a great director. I don’t have an iPhone myself to try this app on, but I’ll get my girlfriend to install it :)

  • Bryce

    @AlexHaas @josh

    Wouldn’t both answering questions that have already been answered, @Jonathan should have just looked at my comment; comment 26. :\

  • Bryce

    EDIT: Wouldn’t bother answering…

  • adrian

    I left Africa Dream…
    Still wondering how to unlock it…
    This apps really makes me insane yesterday….

  • Bryce

    @adrian

    You have to go to Africa to unlock the Africa Dream.. duh.

  • http://Hhh.com Mike

    FakeLocation in cydia for jailbroken users can put you in Africa. Interesting!

  • Nick

    Maybe in the next update, they will include a dream for standing on the top of Everest :-) Just sayin.

  • Bryce

    @Nick

    ahahaha. well, there’s a total of 13 dreams, so that’s four dreams to be included with updates.. so we’ll have to see.

  • Eli

    Hoping they decide to offer an Android version.

  • RjDj

    I really think you should make this app for the Droid too.
    I been watching Inception non-stop and I need something besides the movie.
    So please adjust the app for the Droid!
    P.S. Watched Inception 12 times already…

  • http://www.inewsandapps.com JAG

    @mike this is true. I used the iPhone jailbreak app available through cydia to unlock the Africa dream by spoofing my location within the inception app. I posted this info on my website if anyone is interested at…
