‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Without The Riddler or 3D

tdkr1 The Dark Knight Rises Without The Riddler or 3D

Our buddy Geoff Boucher over at LA Times Hero Complex spoke with Christopher Nolan last night about the upcoming Batman film, which is now titled The Dark Knight Rises, and managed to get a few (and I mean a few) details out of him. One of said few details came when Chris told Geoff, “It won’t be the Riddler,” when talking about the film’s possible baddie line-up, eliminating the strongly rumored villain and the casting theories surrounding it. Chris also mentioned he managed to talk down Warner Bros. from throwing Batman on the 3D bandwagon to instead approach the film with other high definition technology, such as IMAX. Geoff tried to squeeze a few more juicy details out of the acclaimed director, but he was met with resistance.

Nolan plays things close to the vest — he’s one of the few filmmakers of his generation who actually does wear a vest — and he chuckled when I tried to get a few more details out of him. “Oh, you know me, I don’t talk.” He began our conversation by comparing it with a visit to the dentist’s office. Well, if so, he’s a patient who never opens wide. I asked if he could imagine a time when Warner Bros. would let a filmmaker shoot a Batman script where the villain isn’t one of the signature creations from the comic books. “Ah, Geoff Boucher, master of the leading question,” he said with a chuckle.

Keeping the focus on Bruce Wayne, the trilogy’s final installment will see many of the same characters return and have a few new ones pop-up. Head over to LA Times Hero Complex to get the full rundown on the interview, and stick tuned for updates soon. And congratulations to FilipeG for picking Oct. 27 in the Batman 3 Title Contest! You win a copy of Inception on Blu-ray!

Oh, Nolan, you quiet quiet man.

I think I warmed up to the title though.

  • Alterno

I like the title, is good… not what I expected but sounds good.

  • http://www.nolanfans.com TeddyBlass

The title makes Batman Begins feel like the lone movie on it’s own, but other than that, I like it.

  • Mathis

Title could be better but then again, that’s wht i thought about Batman Begins 7 years ago.

  • Slask

but I think The Dark Knight rises isn’t the definitive title..

Batman begins was knowns as “batman triumphant” during pre-production. So I still hope it will be changed in Shadow Of The Bat.
About the villain, no surprise, even if Riddler was perfect for his style, Nolan has got a surprise for us, like he often does :)

No 3d but IMAX??? A DREAM COMING TRUE…

    Meh…

  • Matt

I think the title is decent, definitely better than “Shadow of the Bat”. Glad it is not in 3d but I’m interested in seeing who the main villain is.

  • http://www.nolanfans.com TeddyBlass

Batman Begins was not known as Batman Triumphant. You are confusing your movies. Triumphant was the unmade Joel S. sequel to Batman and Robin.

  • http://Jaycificity.tumblr.com Jay

It was something like ‘The Intimidation Game’.
Btw, The title is the best one seeing it as the last movie [ :'( ] of the series.
Thank you Warner Bros. For that Non-3D Part.

  • Robbman

Not thrilled about the title, but certainly don’t hate it. The notion of a title seems like a pretty miniscule thing in the grand scheme of B3, so I don’t really care. I think its way better than Batman Forever or Batman Triumphant or any of those.. they just sound too catchy to be taken seriously, and the one aspect a Nolan Batman title needs is to be taken seriously.

  • Jamie

    Great news

I don’t like the title. “Dark Knight Rises?”

It sounds cheap, like “Hey ‘The Dark Knight’ was a catchy title lets incoporate it somehow in the next film.” And what would it mean internally? Yeah, we know it’ll continue where TDK left off, having Batman be a criminal. Though the ‘Rise’ part make it more like an expansion than an conlcusion.

“Just add one more word is all you need.” That’s how I feel the title is. Well Batman Begins was just a title character with a word next to it, but a nice combination. The Dark Knight was the definition of Tile epicness, and the next film won’t measure up to it by just adding a ‘Rises.’

I offer “Caped Crusader” as a suggestion. Sounds like a knight of virtue on his final, most epic quest. Now that sounds like an epic conclusion to a hero’s legacy.

  • Ethan

Am I the only one who may be thinking that this sounds like a porn title more than an epic movie title?

  • David

I’m not too worried about the title.

I thought The Dark Knight was a TERRIBLE title when I first heard it.
It sounded too grand to be taken seriously.

But the film made it work.

I’m hoping it’ll be the same with this one.

@David: You thought The Dark Knight was terrible? Best title ever for a Batfilm. :o

  • Jahanzeb

It’s an okay title. Was expecting something better. Something to the level of
TDK which is one of my all time favorite titles for a film. I hope they change it along the way. They should have come up with something without TDK.

good riddance to the Riddler. the fact that it seemed so “logical” a progression in the story makes me happy he’s been tabled. besides, there’s been so many films with villains leaving clues (e.g. seven, the bone collector, taking lives, etc. etc. etc.), it would have been a bit mundane. the idea of tom hardy as black mask with a pinch of catwoman is intriguing, especially the storyline of the false face society abducting lucius fox.

  • Muhammad Anis

i guess the title is okay, i was rooting for “The Caped Crusader”…well at least it is something crazy like Batsy

  • francis_em16

I like the title. I was expecting for something better, but I like it. I think it also covers the marketing aspect of Nolan’s Bat-series (since everybody has seen THE DARK KNIGHT), as far as people’s “familiarity” (at the very least) with the previous, most successful Batman film. In a movie era where remakes and reboots are saturating the cinemas, it assures people that the next film will (obviously) be a DIRECT CONTINUATION of the previous film. Adding the word “RISES” to the already-used “THE DARK KNIGHT” also assures people that, being a direct connection with the last film, that the people behind the previous one’s success will be back (no Joker, though. God Bless Heath).

    awesome

  • BatMotor

Bad bad title, but it will not effect the movie itself i think.

  • francis_em16

    @BatMotor

It certainly won’t (given Nolan’s track record in his film’s quality). Remember a little film titled “INCEPTION”?…the same little film that most (if not all) TDK fans are just waiting to have a QUICK DEATH on its theatrical run just so Chris could worked on Batman 3 right away?, but instead nearly bankrupting most TDK fanboys due to repeated viewings?

  • filipeG

Ahahahahaahaha OMG! It was my birthday, and I won the Inception Blu ray! Thanks a lot!

  • JeffC

the title is just alright…I thought it’d be something like the dark knight redemption…but since the riddler is not in it i hope they thrown in black mask because tom hardy looks like a roman sionis

  • Misho

There has always been 2 villains since Batman Begins.. (Ra’s Al Ghul and Scarecrow) then (Joker and Two Face) Im guessing he will continue that tradition!! And most likely Both b=villains will influence each other.. If im not mistaken Black Mask and Catwoman have an intresting relationship in the comic books! They have this feud.. So my guess is that those are the villains!

  • Slask

    i DEFINETLY agree..

@ teddyblass: yeah, i confused it with Intimidation Game.. however, i still hope this title isn’t official…

  • ThePhantomTerror

Dawn of the Dark Knight sounds better. But anyway, who cares about a title if the film is awesome……

  • The Dark Knight Fan

I was initially disappointed to know that there is no Riddler…But I know Nolan would do anything and everything with purpose…So looking forward to any announcement from him on who would be the villain

  • The Dark Knight Rises Fan

As far as the title of the movie…This is the apt title…Its so good to understand the inner meaning of the title!!
