Harry Knowles, aka the HeadGeek over at AICN, recently divulged some juicy information that may or may not be true regarding Batman 3 (or as we like to call it; 3atman). The rumor he heard is that the production team for the film is “considering” filming the entire 3rd movie in IMAX. According to said rumor:
Part of the reason that Nolan went forward with Inception first – besides taking a creative break from the cape and cowl adventures… was possibly to create a few new IMAX cameras made to his specs. Once again – the cost of shooting an entire feature film on IMAX… the stock, the time it takes to reset, to load, to move the cameras… Well… it is daunting.
Could it be true? By now you probably know our dislike for the constant 3atman rumors, but this is one we haven’t heard before. Anyways, Harry says he is going to look deeper into the situation. He plans to report back on AICN when he learns more, but until then I pose this question: How likely do you think this rumor is?

If any director can pull this off, it’s Nolan. Hands down.

This would be so ridiculously awesome-tacular.

If he does it. My God……………………. o0

I doubt it will happen. IMAX cameras are noisy, you can’t have long takes and they are difficult to work with.
Any project with that kind of undertaking will definitely be massive.

This sounds very legitimate. Nolan is the type of filmmaker that isn’t going to commit to something if he isn’t very confident it is going to work. He probably knows how tough it would be, so he wants to get a solid taste of it.

Here in Portugal we haven’t any IMAX cinemas yet. So either way for me it’s fine.

The 3rd Batman-film is going to be released in 2012, so you have 3 years to build an IMAX cinema, I think it’s plenty of time:-D

My jaw literally dropped. A full movie in IMAX? Spectacular.
Nolan is the man to do this.

Yeah, I thought about that to. But I don’t really know.
Things here walk a bit slowly.
But either way, I hope you’re right!

Eternalist, IMAX cameras have to be reset every 2.5 minutes and it’s not as if individual takes for an action sequence take that much time. During The Dark Knight they just used different cameras to get around the 2.5 minute limit.
After the success of The Dark Knight, I’d be surprised if the production of Batman 3 wasn’t massive.

filipeG: here in Hungary there’s only one IMAX theatre yet, and it was built and opened 1 or 2 years ago, so nothing is impossible;-)

Very true. But we’re talking an ENTIRE movie shot in IMAX. They won’t be afforded that luxury that they had with The Dark Knight.
on August 26, 2009 at 11:24 am
True but let’s not forget that Nolan supposedly wants custom cameras built (kind of like what Cameron did with Avatar) so who knows, what he wants might be far more practical than the standard IMAX cameras.
Btw, are any scenes in Inception being shot using IMAX cameras?

If Nolan really is developing (or planning to develop) new, superior IMAX cameras, then it’d be a different story. But, for now there’s no confirmation that he really is.
I highly suspect that Nolan will indeed incorporate IMAX cameras into Inception.

Just like there’s no confirmation he really is planning on shooting the whole thing on IMAX
But personally I think it would only be logical to develop new cameras if he does want to shoot the whole film on IMAX.
